Hurricane Gilbert on September 10, 1988
Thirty-seven years ago today, on September 10, 1988 (July 30, 1988 lunar calendar), Hurricane Gilbert. After the hurricane, the wreckage of the plane around Manly International Airport was called "Gilbert" ("Hugo" in the United States). The hurricane formed in the western Atlantic Ocean on September 10, 1988. The Caribbean Sea roared, and the cyclone swept up waves more than 10 meters high. The wind speed reached 140 kilometers per hour and slammed westward on the coasts of the Indian Islands and Central America. In nine days, it swept across Jamaica, Haiti, Dominica, Honduras, Mexico and the southeastern coast of the United States, sweeping thousands of miles and leaving a trail of ruins. Total damage was estimated at more than 8 billion US dollars, and more than 1,000 people died. Because it shook the 20th century, it was called the "century" hurricane. In Haiti, crops were swept away and a national state of emergency was declared. In Jamaica, 20% of houses were destroyed, 500,000 people were homeless, and 30 people died. The Prime Minister of the government said: "The east coast of Jamaica seems to have been hit by an atomic bomb!" In Mexico, which suffered the heaviest losses, a hurricane traveling 300 kilometers per hour made landfall on September 14, and seven states groaned and trembled under the strong winds, torrential rain, and waves. Cancun, the "Caribbean paradise" that used to be full of sunshine, became a gray "purgatory", with luxury hotels and water and electricity communication systems destroyed. Tens of thousands of residents were homeless, 6,000 foreign tourists were looted empty-handed by the wind and rain, and female tourists took refuge in the barracks wearing swimming suits and bath towels. It seems that Star Wars have occurred in Texas and Louisiana, and the roads are filled with fleeing cars. The floods caused by the hurricane also caused a large number of casualties and victims. The scene after the hurricane looks like an atomic bomb
