On this day, 43 years ago, on December 23, 1982 (November 9, 1982 in the lunar calendar), architect Yang Tingbao died of illness. Yang Qianbao On December 23, 1982, Professor Yang Tingbao, a famous Chinese architect, died of illness in Nanjing at the age of 81. In the modern architectural history of China, there are two famous architects who are equally famous in the north and south. They are called "Nan Yang and Bei Liang." Among them,"Beiliang" refers to Liang Sicheng, and "Nan Yang" refers to Yang Tingbao, an architect who left Nanyang. Yang Tingbao (1901-1982), also known as Renhui, was born on October 2, 1901 in an intellectual family in Nanyang, Henan Province. In the autumn of 1912, 11-year-old Yang Tingbao was admitted to the Henan Preparatory School for Studying in the United States (the predecessor of Henan University) in Kaifeng, the capital of Henan at that time. Yang Tingbao was valued and taught here by Mr. Lin Boxiang, the principal and educator of the school. After three years of hard study, he graduated with excellent results, and in 1915, he was admitted to Beijing Tsinghua Preparatory School for Study in the United States (the predecessor of Tsinghua University) with the first place in Henan. In the autumn of 1921, Yang Tingbao went to study in the Department of Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania in the United States. As always, he was determined to forge ahead. In just two and a half years, he completed a four-year course. With his superb design works, he participated in the American Architectural Design Award, and won the first prize in the American Urban Academic Association Design Competition and the first prize in Emerson Design Award in one fell swoop, creating a sensation in the United States. These two works were later included in the American book "Principles of Architectural Design" and once became a general teaching material for architecture in the United States and many European countries. The name "Tingbao·Yang" also spread throughout the architectural community. To this end, his teacher, the famous American architect Paul Kerman, hired him with a high salary to work in the United States. Later, he had a deep study of my country's classical architecture and folk architecture. Faced with high salaries, Yang Tingbao politely declined the teacher's heavy employment with the patriotic sentiments of "my children are not ugly, and the people are not afraid of poverty" and the words "my parents are here, but I will not travel far", and resolutely returned to the motherland in 1927. In the 1930s, he participated in the restoration of ancient buildings such as the Hall of Prayer for Good Years, the Ziguang Pavilion, and the Xizhimen Gate Tower in Beijing, and designed large public buildings such as sports fields, hospitals, libraries, and railway stations in Nanjing. After the founding of New China, he participated in the construction of the capital Beijing. Heping Hotel and Wangfujing Department Store were two major projects he designed in the early days of liberation. Yang Tingbao made many contributions in the design battles of important buildings such as the Monument to the People's Heroes, the Great Hall of the People, the Memorial Hall of Chairman Mao, and the New Beijing Library. He provided specific guidance on the design of many projects such as Beijing Railway Station, Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge bridgehead, and Nanjing Airport Terminal Building, and some of them were presided over. Professor Yang Tingbao has served as the vice president of Nanjing Institute of Technology for a long time. He enjoys a high reputation in the architectural community at home and abroad. He was the chairman of the Architectural Society of China before his death, and was re-elected as the vice chairman of the International Association of Architects for two terms. Yang Tingbao's outstanding contribution has attracted the attention of the party and the country. He was elected as a representative of successive National People's Congresses and a member of the Faculty of China Academy of Sciences. In 1979, he was also elected deputy governor of Jiangsu Province.
