On this day, 31 years ago, on August 7, 1994 (July 1, 1994 in the lunar calendar), Liu Haisu, a master of traditional Chinese painting, passed away. In 1988, the 93-year-old China painting master Liu Haisu climbed to the tourist resort of Huangshan for the tenth time to paint. Liu Haisu, an outstanding art educator and master of my country, is well-known at home and abroad. Today, he completed his nearly a century of life journey in Shanghai. Liu Haisu was born on March 16, 1896 in Changzhou City, Jiangsu Province. He is a pioneer of my country's New Art Movement and the founder of modern art education. In 1912, he and his classmate Zhang Yuguang founded the Shanghai Academy of Picture Art, and in 1921 it changed its name to Shanghai Fine Arts School. This is the first official art academy in the history of China's education. He is proficient in Chinese and Western studies, and his art is proficient in ancient and modern times. More than ten countries and regions including the United States, Italy, and Hong Kong have awarded him various honors, medals and titles. On February 28 this year, Haisu old man returned to Shanghai. In May, the old man was admitted to Huadong Hospital due to physical discomfort. He died in the early morning of August 7.
