On this day 108 years ago, December 9, 1917 (October 25, 1917 lunar calendar), the Portuguese republican government fell. A newspaper was burned during the rebellion, and its door was still burning. On December 9, 1917, a military rebellion broke out in Portugal, and the government was forced to step down. President Bernardino Machado was arrested, and former Prime Minister Alfonso Costa established a provisional government. The former Portuguese ambassador to Germany, General Sidonio Pace, who launched the military rebellion, will become president. Pace was a member of the pro-German faction in the military. In January 1915, General Pimenta-Castro led the pro-German faction to establish a military dictatorship after the Portuguese Congress voted to ally with Britain and France and participate in the war against Germany. The dictatorship was overthrown by a pro-democracy uprising in May 1915, Machado was elected president, and in March 1916 Germany declared war on Portugal. This politically motivated military rebellion to overthrow the current government took place in Lisbon, but there were also many violent incidents in Porto, mainly due to the sharp increase in food prices, especially the price of daily food such as bread and potatoes. Many bakeries and food stores were looted. Two people were killed and 60 were taken to hospital during the riots. The governor of Porto ordered a curfew.
