Breaking-News >> TodayHistory December 2, 1964, Berkeley students occupied the administration building
61 years ago today, on December 2, 1964 (October 29, 1964 in the lunar calendar), students at the University of California, Berkeley, occupied the administration building. On September 16, 1964, the University of California, Berkeley, expressly prohibited students from engaging in political and social activities unrelated to teaching. On the 30th, the assistant principal taught five students for violating the new school rules, which aroused dissatisfaction among students. On the same day, hundreds of students launched a massive free speech movement on campus. On November 23, when students participating in the movement held a sit-in in front of the school's central administration building, the school was forced to agree that students could advocate direct political action, but not illegal action. On December 2, the school accused four student movement leaders of violating school rules during past demonstrations, so students held another sit-in and occupied the school administration building. The school asked the police for help. 800 students were arrested. School professors support students and advise the school not to impose disciplinary sanctions on student leaders. On December 8, the school was forced to agree to release the students and give them some political freedom. The actions of Berkeley students are a protest against the school authorities 'interference in students' free speech rights, reflecting young students 'serious dissatisfaction with American society.
