September 9, 1922 Guangdong-Han railway workers went on strike
103 years ago today, on September 9, 1922 (July 18, 1922 in the lunar calendar), workers on the Guangdong-Han Railway went on strike. On September 6, 1922, the Yuezhou, Changsha, Zhuping and Wuchang Xujiapeng Workers 'Clubs of Yuehan Road formed a federation of workers' clubs across the road. They submitted requests to the Railway Bureau and the Beijing Ministry of Communications to punish workers, protect political rights, and increase wages, but received no reply. On the 9th, workers across the road went on strike. The Guangdong-Han Railway Workers 'Club Federation issued a "Strike Declaration" saying: "In order to lift oppression, maintain the group, improve life, and enhance our personality, we have to fight against the scabs and have this last resort." "We strive for survival, strive for our character, set our goals, and never stop fighting to the death." Warlord Xiao Yaonan sent troops to suppress the strike and force workers to return to work. Workers at Xujiapeng and Yuezhou stations collectively put on the rails to protest. They were suppressed by the military police. More than 200 people were arrested and injured. Strike leader Guo Liang was arrested. The strike received strong support from the Wuhan Federation of Industrial Unions and all walks of life in Hunan. On the 22nd, workers from Changxindian, Zhengzhou, Xinyang and Luoyang on Longhai Road on the Beijing-Han Railway called the Guangdong-Han Railway Bureau one after another, stating that if the Guangdong-Han workers 'demands were not answered, a General Alliance strike would be implemented. On the 27th, all workers on the Beijing-Han and Guangdong-Han railways called Wu Peifu, demanding a satisfactory reply to the strikers 'demands within 48 hours, otherwise two all-round strikes would be held. With the support of workers in Hunan, Hubei and other places, the strike lasted for 19 days, forcing Wu Peifu to call the Yuehan Road Bureau to agree to the conditions put forward by the striking workers and release the arrested workers. On the 28th, the strike ended successfully.
