July 21, 1985 Divers found multimillion-dollar treasure
Forty years ago today, July 21, 1985 (June 4, 1985 in the lunar calendar), divers found millions of dollars worth of treasure. Sunken Treasure Found in Key West On July 21, 1985, divers recovered millions of dollars worth of gold, silver and copper treasures aboard the Spanish galleon Nustra Senora de Atocha off the coast of Florida. The Atocha sank in a hurricane in 1622. Pieces of the ship littered the Key West Sea, and a salvage company located the ship after 16 years of searching. Company manager Mayer Fisher and his two sons dug underwater and found a large number of silver bars and thousands of coins after digging out 5 feet of mud and mud. The treasure was found on the day one of Fisher's sons and his wife died ten years ago while searching for the Atocha.
