The Mayflower arrives in Plymouth, and Britain begins construction of its first North American colony

On December 21, 1620, the Mayflower arrived in Plymouth, Massachusetts, in the United States, and began the construction of the first British colony in North America.

The Mayflower was a passenger ship carrying Puritans from Plymouth, England, to Plymouth Colony, Massachusetts, in the New World of America in 1620. On September 16, 102 Puritans boarded a wooden sailboat called the Mayflower, set out from England, and docked near Cape Cod on November 11 (both in the Julian calendar). Only one person died and a baby was born during the 66-day voyage, so 102 still arrived at the destination. The voyage was inspired by the successful establishment of Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement, by the Virginia Company in 1607.

Commentary: The beginning of a colonial history that caused suffering to the natives.

Key words: December 21, 1620, Plymouth, North America, England
