On November 7, 1984, my country's jurist Ni Zhengo was elected as a judge of the International Court of Justice
Forty-one years ago today, on November 7, 1984 (October 15, 1984), our country's jurist Ni Zhengoh was elected as a judge of the International Court of Justice. On November 7, 1984, Ni Zhengoh, a famous Chinese international law expert, legal adviser to the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and member of the International Law Commission, was elected as a judge of the International Court of Justice at the United Nations. This is the first time China has been elected to participate in the work of the International Court of Justice since it resumed its seat in the United Nations in 1971, and it has therefore received widespread attention. The International Court of Justice is the main judicial organ of the United Nations in The Hague. It consists of fifteen judges of different nationalities, who serve a term of nine years and are re-elected every three years. The plenary session of the General Assembly and the Security Council held separate meetings this morning, and both elected five new judges by more than half of the votes to replace the judges whose terms of office are about to expire. The other four judges elected at the same time as Ni Zhengoh are: Jens Evenson (Norway), Teslin Olavale Elias (Nigeria), Shigeru Oda (Japan) and Manfired-Lagos (Poland). After Ni Zhengoh was elected, representatives and friendly people from many countries expressed warm congratulations to him. Ni Zhengoh said that his election shows the improvement of China's international status and high prestige in the world, and also reflects the respect and active support of friendly countries for China. Ni Zhengoh said that he will work with colleagues in the International Court of Justice to handle and resolve disputes between countries in accordance with international law and the principles of the UN Charter, promote cooperation and friendly relations among countries, and contribute to maintaining world peace and security, achieving justice, and eliminating discrimination and inequality.
