Thirty-two years ago today, on July 17, 1993 (May 28, 1993 lunar calendar), Yu Zhenfei, a Beijing-Kunqu performing artist, passed away. Yu Zhenfei (1902~ 1993) was a Peking Opera and Kunqu Opera performing artist, a worker and a young student. Famous for Yuanwei, with the word Diyi and the name Zhenfei, originally from Songjiang (now in Shanghai), born in Suzhou on July 15, 1902 (June 11, Guangxu 28). His father was Yu Sulu, a famous Kunqu opera master in the south of the Yangtze River. Yu Zhenfei studied Kunqu Opera at the age of 6, and worked hard. At the age of 14, he took the stage as a young student; later he studied in Shen Yuequan. He has learned to sing more than 200 times Kunqu opera. In 1931, Yu Zhenfei served as a lecturer at Jinan University. At the request of Cheng Yanqiu, he resigned as a lecturer and went to Beijing to participate in performances. He returned to join Cheng Jixian and studied Peking Opera. In 1934, he officially became a professional small student actor in Qiusheng Club and was carefully instructed by Cheng Jixian. In Cheng Yanqiu's new repertoire, Yu Zhenfei created many vivid artistic images. He played Li Jing in "The Legend of Red Flower", Emperor Xuanzong of Tang in "Concubine Mei", and Wang Hui in "Chungui Dream", all of which have new creations. Since the 1930s, he has cooperated with Cheng Yanqiu, Mei Lanfang, Ma Lianliang, Zhang Junqiu, etc. In the late 1940s, he performed in Hong Kong and returned to Beijing in 1955. He also worked with Zhou Xinfang, Huang Guiqiu, Zhang Bingyun, Xinyanqiu, Li Yuru, Tong Zhiling, Wu Suqiu and many other famous artists on the same stage. In 1957, he served as the principal of Shanghai Opera School. He is proficient in poetry, calligraphy and painting, and is good at flute. He has a unique pursuit of the singing, recitation, biting, gas and voice of Peking Opera students, forming a refined, elegant and bookish performance style. His wife is Yan Huizhu, an actor in Peking Opera. Yu Zhenfei's representative works include Kunqu Opera "Taibai Drunk Writing", "Dream in the Garden", "Qin Pick", "Broken Bridge", etc.; Peking Opera "Yutang Spring", "Spring and Autumn Match", "Qi Shuanghui", "Supervision of Alcohol" and so on.
