Kim Dae-jung was among supporters On December 19, 1997, the South Korean Central Election Management Commission officially announced the results of the presidential election. Kim Dae-jung, the presidential candidate of the National Conference of the New Politics, defeated the Grand National Party candidate Lee Hoi-chang and the National New Party candidate Lee In-ji with a vote rate of 40.4%, and was elected South Korea's 15th President. Kim Dae-jung was born in South Jeolla Province, South Korea in December 1925. He has been in politics since the 1960s. He has been elected to Congress six times and failed to run for president three times. During the administrations of Park Chung-hee and Chun Doo-hwan, Kim Dae-jung was kidnapped, house arrest and imprisoned.
