Wu Yuzhang, born in 1940, was of Hui nationality and a native of Beijing. Since childhood, he was passed down by his father Wu Songyan's family to the Jin (Shaoshan) school. He joined the Chinese Opera Experimental School (later known as the Chinese Opera School) in the 1950s and was taught by famous teachers such as Song Futing, Zhao Rongxin, Sun Shengwen, Hou Xirui, and Li Chunheng. After graduating in 1958, Wu Yuzhang joined the Fourth Troupe of the Chinese Peking Opera Theater, and in 1961 and 1963, he studied performance skills under Qiu Shengrong and Yuan Shihai, who were the masters of many families. He is good at performing in plays such as "Chi Sang Town", "Exploration of the Tomb of the Emperor", "Qi Qi", "Gui Mei Case", "Battle on the Plains" and so on.
