On August 4, 1792, the greatest English lyric poet, Shelley, was born
On this day, 233 years ago, on August 4, 1792 (June 17, 1792 lunar calendar), Shelley, the greatest lyric poet in England, was born. Percy Beech Shelley (August 4, 1792 - July 8, 1822), the greatest lyric poet in England, came from a family of some status and power. His father was a gentleman in Sussex and a Whig member of Parliament; his grandfather was a baron and amassed a fortune. Shelley was the eldest son, so when he grew up, he was expected to be both wealthy and titled. At the age of 8, Shelley began to try to write poetry. At the age of 12, he entered Eton College and Oxford University at the age of 18. On March 25, 1811, Shelley was expelled from Oxford University after less than a year of schooling for distributing "The Necessity of Atheism". On February 12, 1812, Shelley, who sympathized with Ireland, which was forcibly incorporated by Britain, and his wife traveled to Dublin to support the liberation cause of Irish Catholics, where Shelley gave an impassioned speech and distributed "Letter to the Irish People" and "Proposal for the Establishment of a Fraternal Society". From 1818 to 1819, Shelley completed two important long poems, "Prometheus Unchained" and "The Contract", with the extremely immortal masterpiece "Ode to the West Wind". " Prometheus Unleashed, like Queen Meb, could not be published publicly, while Shelley's most mature and perfectly constructed work, The Chance, was described by British critics as "the worst work of our time, seemingly at the hands of the devil." On July 8, 1822, Shelley and his two companions were killed when their boat, Don Juan, a small boat he had built on his way back to Lerich from the Sea of Lehangdo, capsized in a storm. According to local Tuscan law, any floating object must be burned, and Shelley's body was cremated in a Greek ceremony by his former friends Byron and Trelawney, who spread frankincense on the body and sprinkled salt on the fire. In January of the following year, Shelley's ashes were brought back to Rome and buried in what he considered the most ideal resting place.
