On this day 103 years ago, on June 23, 1922 (May 28, 1922), diplomat Wu Tingfang passed away. Wu Yanfang, who served as the US ambassador in 1896, died on June 23, 1922 in Guangzhou. Wu Tingfang, a famous modern diplomat, was named Wenjue and named Zhanyong. He was born in 1842 and was a Xinhui in Guangdong. He graduated from St. Paul's College in Hong Kong in his early years. In 1874, he went to Lincoln Law School in the United Kingdom to study law and qualified as a lawyer. He served as a lawyer and judge in Hong Kong. Later, he joined the Shogunate of Li Hongzhang and assisted in foreign affairs and diplomacy. He served as minister to the United States, Mexico, Cuba, Peru and other countries. After the 1911 Revolution, he supported the republic and joined Zhang Jian and other organizations, the Republican Reunification Association, which was promoted by the southern provinces as the plenipotentiary representative of the civilian military to negotiate peace, and held peace talks with Tang Shaoyi, the representative sent by Yuan Shikai. After the establishment of the Nanjing government, he served as the chief legislative officer. In 1916, he served as the chief foreign affairs officer of Duan Qirui's cabinet. In 1917, he served as the acting prime minister. Soon after, he went south and worked with Sun Yat-sen to serve as the chief foreign affairs officer and chief finance officer of the Protector Military Government. In April 1922, he also served as the governor of Guangdong Province. He died of anger after failing to persuade Britain and the United States to strictly maintain neutrality and not help Chen Jiongming's rebels in diplomacy.
