On August 3, 1947, the Netherlands and Indonesia reached an armistice agreement
On this day, 78 years ago, August 3, 1947 (June 17, 1947 in the lunar calendar), the Netherlands and Indonesia reached an armistice agreement. On the evening of August 3, 1947, the Netherlands and the Republic of Indonesia announced that they would abide by the request of the United Nations Security Council for a ceasefire. This marks an initial victory for the United Nations Security Council to prevent the development of conflicts. The arbitration issue has not yet been resolved. The Dutch will recognize the United States as a mediator. Indonesia, however, craves arbitration among several countries. They also asked the Security Council to "continue to monitor" the ceasefire and asked Dutch troops to withdraw to their positions on the eve of the July 20 war.
