November 15, 2008 Hangzhou subway collapse accident

On November 15, 2008 (the 18th lunar month), a Hangzhou subway collapsed.

At about 15:20 p.m. on November 15, the construction site of the No. 1 subway line on Fengqing Avenue in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province collapsed. The Fengqing Avenue collapsed more than 100 meters long and collapsed to a depth of about 20 meters, causing the river to overflow. Several workers were pressed into the collapsed pit. Experts said the subway collapse accident was the largest accident in the history of Chinese subway construction.

China Broadcasting Network, Beijing, November 25, reported that the "November 15" Hangzhou subway construction site collapse accident has entered its tenth day, and the on-site search and rescue is still in full swing. The reporter learned from the rescue site that from 20:00 on November 22 to 16:00 on the 23 rd, rescuers found the bodies of five victims in the middle of the east side of the foundation pit; no new victims were found on the 24th.()

So far, the death toll from the accident has been confirmed to be 17, and another 4 people are missing. At present, 10 injured people are still hospitalized, and their conditions are basically stable. They continue to receive medical treatment and psychological intervention.

As the rescue continues, the deep soil conditions at the accident site are becoming more and more complex. The continued excavation operation is affected by the surrounding environment. The soil clearing and rescue operation is becoming more and more difficult, and the rescue work has entered a more arduous stage. As the thickness of silt in the foundation pit continues to decrease, the pressure of the earth on both sides on the foundation pit also continues to increase. In order to prevent the continuous wall from collapsing under pressure and causing new dangers, the construction unit carried out earth-rock excavation work on the outside of the continuous wall to balance the internal and external pressure. Firefighters patrol around the foundation pit 24 hours a day.

At present, all subway sites and construction projects in Hangzhou have been comprehensively inspected and hidden dangers investigated. Hangzhou Metro Group has organized professional and technical personnel to conduct safety education and training for all construction personnel of the 39 subway project departments that have started construction.

It is also reported that PICC Property and Casualty Insurance Zhejiang Branch and CPIC Property and Casualty Insurance Zhejiang Branch have paid 10 million yuan in advance for the accident.
