On October 26, 1937, General Xie Jinyuan led 800 strong men to defend the four-line warehouse against Japan
On this day, 88 years ago, on October 26, 1937 (September 23, 1937, the lunar calendar), General Xie Jinyuan led 800 strong men to defend the Sihang Warehouse against Japan. Xie Jinyuan was born in poverty. He graduated from Whampoa Military Academy in 1926. In 1937, he served as deputy of the 524th regiment of the 262nd Brigade of the 88th Division. After the regiment commander was seriously injured, he was promoted to regiment commander. Seeing the Japanese army brutally killing the China people at that time, Xie Jinyuan and his soldiers were all eager to fight the Japanese army to the death. At that time, the Japanese army was arrogant and threatened to "capture Shanghai within three days." However, Xie Jinyuan led his army to fight against the Japanese army for two months and still held on to its position. On October 26, the Japanese army broke through the Dachang defense line, and the China army retreated under the cover of Xie's regiment. At 11 p.m., Xie was ordered to lead 800 people from the 1st Battalion to guard the Sixing Warehouse along the Suzhou River. The four-line warehouse is a seven-story steel reinforced concrete building. Xie vowed to defend and was willing to live or die with the position. The Japanese army originally thought that this small stronghold would not be difficult to remove, but unexpectedly, they launched an attack on the afternoon of the 27th. The two sides faced each other for 4 days and 4 nights. 800 people repelled multiple attacks by 10,000 enemy people and killed more than 200 enemy people. They only sacrificed 5 people. On the 30th, Xie Jinyuan received an order to withdraw, so he had to endure the pain and cross the bridge across the Suzhou River into the Public Concession. The strong men left the position in tears, thanking them for being the last to leave. At this point, the Shanghai War ended. After the 800 lone troops entered the Concession, they were disarmed by the British troops in the Concession on the pretext and placed in a temporary barracks next to Jiaozhou Park. Xie Jinyuan always wanted to return to the team, but the Shanghai Concession became an isolated island and had no way out. At that time, the Lone Military Camp became a beacon shining on the whole city of Shanghai, and people visited it every day. Xie Jinyuan runs the army extremely strictly. He raises flags, conducts exercises, and studies every day. His life is orderly. Everyone is waiting to return to the battlefield one day. Unfortunately, the incident occurred in the early morning of April 24, 1941. At that time, four unworthy soldiers colluded with the outside world and used the morning exercise time to attack Xie on the head and chest with daggers and pickaxes. Xie fell to the ground bleeding and died soon after. He was only 37 years old. This incident shook the country. The next day, a coffin burial ceremony was held in the isolated military camp, and more than 60,000 people went to pay condolences. In December of the same year, the Pacific War broke out. The Japanese army entered the concession and attempted to organize the isolated military camp into a puppet army. It was resolutely rejected and intimidated by the people's will. The Japanese army did not dare to massacre the isolated army and scattered them to various places to serve as coolies. The lone army did not stop fighting during its captivity. With the cooperation of our underground party, an isolated army sent to Zhuji, Zhejiang Province jumped out of the net and went up the mountain to fight guerrilla warfare. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, these people worked on their own and lived a difficult life. Until the liberation of Shanghai, Mayor Chen Yi personally arranged their work.
