On October 7, 2001 (August 21, 2001 in the lunar calendar), the Taliban regime collapsed during the war in Afghanistan. On October 7, 2001, the United States and Britain launched a large-scale air strike into Afghanistan on the grounds that the Taliban sheltered and harboured the murderers behind the September 11 terrorist attacks. Under the carpet of fierce bombing and the strong cooperation of the Afghan anti-Taliban coalition, the Taliban regime was defeated one after another. On November 13, the Northern Alliance entered the capital Kabul, marking a turning point in the war in Afghanistan. On November 14, Northern Alliance troops occupied Jalalabad, the main city of eastern Afghanistan, and the Taliban's rule in Afghanistan was on the verge of collapse. On December 7, the Taliban handed over their base camp, Kandahar, marking the complete end of Taliban rule in Afghanistan. As the war in Afghanistan was coming to an end, the United Nations and the international community actively promoted the process of rebuilding the Afghan regime, leading to a meeting of the four major Afghan political factions in Bonn, Germany from November 27 to December 5 to negotiate the establishment of a "broad-based", universally representative new Afghan government. On December 5, all parties signed the Bonn Agreement, launching the process of regime reconstruction in Afghanistan. On December 22, the Afghan interim government was formally established. According to the Bonn Agreement, the interim government will serve for a six-month term, after which a transitional government will be established and general elections are scheduled to be held in two years. However, what faces interim Prime Minister Karzai will be an extremely difficult and arduous road.
