Breaking-News >> TodayHistory Tang Dynasty famous talented woman Shangguan Waner passed away
Shangguan Wan 'er, also known as Shangguan Zhaorong (664 AD-July 21 AD, 710 AD), was a female official, poet, and Zhaorong of the Tang Dynasty. A native of Shan County, Shaanxi Prefecture (now Sanmenxia, Henan Province), she was the granddaughter of Shangguan Yi. After being convicted and killed, Shangguan Yi was assigned to the inner court as a slave with her mother Zheng. At the age of fourteen, he was important to Wu Zetian because of his intelligence and good writing. He was in charge of the palace's patent making for many years and was known as the "Female Prime Minister." During the reign of Emperor Zhongzong of the Tang Dynasty, he was granted the title of Zhaorong, which made him even more powerful. He had a prominent position in the political and literary circles at that time. He once suggested expanding the library and adding bachelor's degrees. During this period, he presided over elegance and commented on the world's poems and poems on behalf of the court. At a time, many Ci ministers gathered together. In 710, King Linzi (known as Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty) raised his army and launched the Tang Long coup, and was killed at the same time as Empress Wei.
In the first year of Lin Deyuan (664), Shangguan Yi was killed by Empress Wu for drafting an edict for Gaozong to abolish Wu Zetian. The newly born Shangguan Wan'er and her mother Zheng were both matched to Ye Ting. During the period of Ye Ting's slavery, under the careful training of her mother, Shangguan Wan'er read poetry and books, and could not only recite poetry, but also be clear about official affairs, and was very smart. In the second year of Yifeng (677), Shangguan Wan'er was summoned to the palace by Wu Zetian, and asked her to follow the topic on the spot. Shangguan Wan'er did not add a little text, and it took a while to complete, and the text was smooth, the words were gorgeous, and the language was beautiful, which seemed to be composed by a long time. After seeing it, Wu Zetian was overjoyed, and immediately ordered him to be exempted from his slave status and let him be in charge of the imperial edicts in the palace. Soon, Shangguan Waner was sentenced to death for violating the will of the emperor, but Wu Zetian cherished his literary talent and specially pardoned him, just by tattooing his face. After that, Shangguan Waner then carefully served and catered to her, which was even more pleasing to Wu Zetian. From the first year of Tongtian (696) (from "Jinglong Wenguan Library", "The Old Book of the Tang Dynasty" was the holy calendar year), he was allowed to handle the bass table, participate in the government affairs, and his power grew. In the first year of Shenlong (705), after the restoration of Emperor Zhongzong of the Tang Dynasty, Shangguan Waner was ordered to be in charge of drafting the edict, which was deeply trusted and worshipped as Zhaorong, and named his mother Zheng as Mrs. Peiguo. In the second year, Wu Sansi relied on the support of Empress Wei and Princess Anle and others, and successively designed to demean five kings such as Zhang Jianzhi, Huan Yanfan, Jinghui, Yuan Shuji, and Cui Xuanwei. Shangguan Wan'er had an affair with him again, and in the draft edicts, he often praised the Wu family and suppressed the royal family, causing the crown prince Li Chongjun to be angry. In July of the first year of Jinglong (707), Li Zhongjun and Zuo Yulin General Li Duozuo, etc., issued an edict to more than 300 people of the Yulin Army, killed Wu Sansi and Wu Chongxun in his mansion, and executed more than ten of his relatives. They also led troops to cut in from the door of Suzhang, knocking on the door and arresting Shangguan Wan'er. Shangguan Wan'er hurriedly fled to Tang Zhongzong and Wei Hou, and threatened, "The Crown Prince's intention is to kill Shangguan Wan'er first, and then capture the Queen and His Majesty in turn." Empress Wei and Zhongzong were furious for a while, so they took Shangguan Wan'er and Princess Anle to Xuanwu Gate to avoid the soldiers, and asked the right-wing Yulin general Liu Jingren to lead more than 2,000 flying cavalry to stand in front of Taiji Palace and defend himself behind closed doors. The Crown Prince was defeated and killed. After that, Shangguan Wan'er often persuaded Zhongzong to set up a large number of scholars in Zhaowen Hall, widely summoned the ministers of the current dynasty, and gave banquets and amusements many times. Shangguan Wan'er every time replaced Zhongzong, Wei Hou and Princess Anle at the same time, and wrote several songs at the same time. The poems were beautiful, and most of the time they were recited and sung. Zhongzong also ordered Shangguan Wan'er to evaluate the poems written by the ministers, ranking first, and often rewarded Jinjue, which was incomparably valuable. Therefore, inside and outside the court, chanting poems and composing endowments became popular. Zhongzong sent people to pass through pools and build rocks in Shangguan Wan'er's residence, and they were very poor and carved, often leading ministers to feast and enjoy them. At that time, the palace was forbidden to be wide and sparse, and officials in the Shangguan Wan'er then bought houses with some palace officials outside the palace, and often handed over and interacted with them, and some people sought high-ranking official positions because of this. It was because of the affair with Shangguan Wan'er in the outer house that Cui Yu, the waiter of the Chinese script, was later introduced as a photo. Soon, when Cui Yu was presiding over the election, he violated the rules and was impeached by the imperial historian Li Shangyin, and was demoted to Sima of Waizhou for crime; also because Shangguan Wan'er and Princess An Le applied for him, he was still reinstated as an official. In the fourth year of Jinglong (710), the power of Princess Taiping became more and more prosperous, and Shangguan Wan'er attached to Princess Taiping. In June, after Tang Zhongzong was poisoned by Empress Wei and Princess Anle, Shangguan Wan'er and Princess Taiping drafted a last edict together, making King Wen Li Chongmao the crown prince, Queen Wei knew political affairs, and Prime Minister Li Dan participated in government affairs. In July, King Li Longji of Linzi led the Yulin soldiers into the palace to kill Empress Wei and his henchmen. Shangguan Wan'er led the palace people to greet and showed the last edict she and Princess Taiping to Liu Youqiu to watch. Liu Youqiu took the last edict to Li Longji to explain it, but Li Longji did not allow it and killed Shangguan Wan'er under his banner. In the early years of Kaiyuan, Emperor Xuanzong of Tang sent people to collect Shangguan Wan'er's poems and compile them into 20 volumes of anthologies, so that Zhang said to make a preface. This collection is now lost, and "All Tang Poems" only contains 32 of his posthumous poems.
