Breaking-News >> TodayHistory May 18, 1927 Hollywood China Theater opened
Ninety-eight years ago today, on May 18, 1927 (April 18, 1927), the Hollywood Chinese Theater opened. In the 1920s and 1930s, Grauman, who was revered as "Mr. Hollywood", was a well-known figure in the American film industry. Grauman invested in and operated several theaters in Hollywood and other places, but he always felt that these theaters were not ideal. Grauman wanted to build a first-class theater in Hollywood with an oriental architectural style to match his financial resources and fame - that is, the Chinese theater in his imagination. The Chinese theater started construction on January 5, 1926. Grauman himself, the famous actors of the time Norma Talmadge, Conrad Nagar, Chaplin and the Chinese actress Wang Meianna attended the groundbreaking ceremony. Why did Grauman, an American, build a Chinese theater? Grauman has a close Chinese friend, Kay Luke. Luke is also a highly accomplished actor. He was born in Seattle, came to Los Angeles in the 1920s to make a living, met Grauman, and the two later became close friends. Luke's cultivation and interest in Chinese and Eastern cultures greatly influenced Grauman, and he supported Grauman's construction of the Chinese theater. Some of the most striking murals in Chinese theaters today are Luke's works of the year. On May 28, 1927, to celebrate the official opening of the Chinese Theatre, the premiere of a new work by renowned director and filmmaker DeMille, "The King of Kings," was held simultaneously. From 1943 to 1945, the Academy Awards ceremony was held at the Chinese Grand Theatre for three consecutive years. The theatre still has a photo of Jennifer Jones, winner of the 1944 Academy Award for Best Actress, with famous actress Ingrid Bergman, dated March 2, 1944. The Chinese Theatre's film superstars are imprinted on the concrete floor in the courtyard in front of the Chinese Theatre, covered with the handprints and footprints of 238 famous film actors from different periods and styles, from Marilyn Monroe to Sylvester Stallone. The first actor to leave her footprints here was Norma Talmadge, who wrote a message of blessing to others under her footprints: "My wish is that you succeed." The celebrity corridor on the Walk of Fame is engraved with the names of famous contemporary actors on the sidewalk about two blocks next to the Chinese Theater. This is the world-famous Hollywood Walk of Fame. There are currently more than 2,400 famous American directors, actors and other literary and artistic figures who have left their names on the Walk of Fame, including the movie superstar Gregory Peck who played "Roman Holiday" and "Millionaire", the hardline star Schwarzenegger, the Chinese Hong Kong martial arts stars Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan, the famous film director Spielberg, the pop king Michael Jackson and so on. In Hollywood and the American entertainment industry, striving to have their name engraved on the celebrity corridor of the Walk of Fame is the lifelong goal of many actors. As a combination of Eastern and Western cultures, the Chinese theater has long become a must-visit place for tourists from all over the world to visit the United States. On January 11, 2013, the landmark building "Hollywood Chinese Theater" located on the Hollywood Walk of Fame announced that it would officially change its name to "Hollywood TCL Chinese Theater" (TCLChineseTheatre). This is the first time the theater has carried out title cooperation with enterprises since it was built 85 years ago. This milestone event marks a new level of cooperation between Chinese brands represented by TCL and the international entertainment industry, and also represents a new height of globalization strategy for Chinese enterprises.
