On this day 32 years ago, on June 5, 1993 (April 16, 1993 lunar calendar), Kuwait sentenced the former Prime Minister of the puppet regime to death in absentia. On June 5, 1993, the Kuwaiti National Security Court sentenced in absentia the Prime Minister of the Kuwaiti Interim Government, who was supported by Iraq during the occupation of Kuwait, to death. Nine members of the Kuwaiti Interim Government, all Kuwaiti military officers, were arrested on August 2, 1990, during the Iraqi army's invasion of Kuwait, and were later appointed by the Iraqi authorities as members of the Kuwaiti Interim Government. When the Iraqi army withdrew from Kuwait after the Gulf War, the remaining 8 members surrendered to the Kuwaiti authorities, except for Aaliyah. The Kuwaiti Prosecutor's Office charged Aaliyah with crimes against Kuwait's independence and territorial integrity, and providing intelligence to Iraq. The Kuwaiti National Magistrate Court also began the trial of 14 Iraqis and Kuwaitis accused of attempting to murder former US President George W. Bush. According to court sources, two of the Iraqis accused of planning the murder pleaded guilty in court. The other defendants pleaded not guilty. Court sources also said that the two Kuwaitis accused of harboring assassins could be sentenced to five years in prison if the evidence is conclusive.
