October 29, 1889 The birth of revolutionary pioneer Li Dazhao
136 years ago today, October 29, 1889 (October 6, 1889, the lunar calendar) was the birthday of revolutionary pioneer Li Dazhao. On the afternoon of April 28, 1927, Li Dazhao took a group photo with his friends Lu Youyu (left) and Zhang Yilan (right) before he died. On October 29, 1889, Li Dazhao was born in Daheituo Village, Leting County, Hebei Province. When he was less than a year old, his parents both passed away, and his grandfather raised him. When he was very young, he listened to his teacher telling the story of the Taiping Rebellion, and he envied Hong Xiuquan, the leader of the peasant uprising. When he was at school, he expressed his ambition to serve the country by answering questions from his teacher. He once said: "If you want to establish yourself, you should first worry about the country. The rise and fall of the country and every man is responsible. Studying is to strengthen the country and enrich the people. You can't just think about your life in luxury and food, and forget the country and nation." Seeing the darkness of society and the dangerous situation of the country inspired the patriotic enthusiasm of young Li Dazhao, and he was determined to find a way out for the suffering China. In the winter of 1913, Li Dazhao traveled eastward to Japan to study, where he began to come into contact with socialist thought and Marxist theory. Three years later, he returned to his motherland and actively participated in the struggle against Yuan Shikai and the emerging New Culture Movement. In 1918, Li Dazhao was hired by Cai Yuanpei, President of Peking University, to serve as director and professor of economics at Peking University Library and editor-in-chief of New Youth magazine. After the news of the victory of the Russian October Revolution reached China, Li Dazhao immediately published the papers "Victory of the Common People" and "Victory of Bolshevism", introducing Marxism-Leninism to the people of China. He actively led the May 4th Movement. In 1920, he organized and established a Communist Leading Group in Beijing. At that time, many young people accepted Marxism under his influence. Some later became early activists of the Communist Party of China, such as Deng Zhongxia and Gao Junyu. Mao Zedong and Zhou Enlai were also influenced by Li Dazhao's revolutionary thoughts. Mao Zedong once said that Li Dazhao was his teacher and he accepted Marxism with Li Dazhao's help and influence. Li Dazhao made unremitting efforts to establish the Communist Party of China. He and Chen Duxiu are known as "South Chen and North Li" and are among the main founders of the Communist Party. After the founding of the Communist Party of China, Li Dazhao guided the work of the north on behalf of the central government and successively launched famous struggles such as the Kailuan strike and the Beijing-Han Railway strike. He was also entrusted by the Communist Party to conduct negotiations on cooperation between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party with Sun Yat-sen in Shanghai, and went to Guangzhou to participate in the leadership work of the First National Congress of the Kuomintang. He made significant contributions to the establishment of the National Revolutionary United Front and the realization of the first cooperation between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party. In April 1927, Li Dazhao was arrested by reactionary warlord Zhang Zuolin and died heroically at the age of 38. He has fought for the liberation of the China people all his life. To this day, people have not forgotten his glorious image and great achievements. In memory of Li Dazhao, on October 29, 1989, the 100th anniversary of his birth, people placed a statue of Li Dazhao carved out of white granite in the "Dazhao Park" in Tangshan City, Hebei Province. In June 1991, another one-meter-high bronze statue of Li Dazhao was placed in Daheituo Village, Leting County, his hometown, Hebei Province.
