On November 23, 1979, the Ku Klux Klan became active again in the southern United States
Forty-six years ago today, on November 23, 1979 (October 4, 1979 in the lunar calendar), the Ku Klux Klan became active again in the southern United States. The infamous Ku Klux Klan, an American racist organization, recently became active again in Greensboro, North Carolina, USA. This incident caused great dissatisfaction among the local people. In early November, a protest march was held in Greensboro called "The Ku Klux Klan Must Die". A group of armed Klan men stormed the march and opened fire on the demonstrators, killing four demonstrators on the spot and injuring 10 others, one of whom died in the hospital a few days later. According to reports, most of the people participating in this protest march were local black and white workers. Demonstrators and families of the dead and wounded accused the police of being slow to respond to the violence, giving the attackers enough time to carry out their atrocities. White House Press Secretary Powell said President Carter was concerned about the new strength of the Ku Klux Klan in the South against blacks, Jews and foreigners.
