In order to mobilize the troops affiliated to the Xi'an "appeasement" Office to move north and coordinate the advance of the People's Liberation Army's Shanxi-Hebei-Shandong-Henan Field Army into western Henan, Peng Dehuai, commander and political commissar of the Northwest Field Army, followed the unified strategic deployment of the Central Military Commission of the Communist Party of China, commanded his 1st, 2nd, and 3rd columns, the teaching brigade, and the newly compiled 4th brigade, totaling 8 brigades. On July 31, they attacked Yulin from the Suide area north. On August 6, peripheral operations were carried out, Yulin City was surrounded on the 7th, and the city was attacked on the 10th. Due to the strong city wall, the Northwest Field Army lacked artillery support and was not well organized and prepared, and it had not yet been conquered by the evening of the 11th. During this period, the Kuomintang Army Headquarters ordered the garrison troops in Yulin to hold on and wait for help, and on the other hand ordered Hu Zongnan, director of the Xi'an "pacification" Office, to regroup a total of 8 brigades of the 1st and 29th Armies from Ansai and Baoan branches to Suide and Jiaxian (Jinjia County). In addition, the main force of the 36th Division was used to take a shortcut to aid Yulin in an attempt to eliminate the Northwest Field Army at the foot of Yulin. On the 11th, the 1st and 29th Army crossed Qingyang Cha and Zichang (formerly known as Anding) respectively, and the 36th Division bypassed the Great Wall and approached Yulin. In view of the fact that its goal of mobilizing the main force of Hu Zong's south to move north had been achieved, the Northwest Field Army withdrew and besieged Yulin on the 12th. In this battle, more than 5200 Kuomintang troops were wiped out. Although it has not been conquered, it is still a victory.
