The Federation of Malaysia was established on September 16, 1963
62 years ago today, September 16, 1963 (July 29, 1963 in the lunar calendar), the Federation of Malaysia was established. In May 1961, Prime Minister Tunku Rahman of the Federal Republic of Malaysia first proposed a plan for the Federation of Malaysia to consist of the Commonwealth of Malaysia and the British colonies of Singapore, Sabah, Sarawak and Brunei. It was supported by Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew of the Autonomous State of Singapore. Britain and the United States tried their best to promote the implementation of this plan. In February 1963, Malaysia, New Zealand, Sabah, Sarawak and Brunei held a meeting in the capital of Sabah on the issue of federalism. Malaysia and New Zealand reached a compromise. On July 9, the signing ceremony of the Malay Federation Agreement was held in London. Representatives of the Malaysian Federation, Singapore, Sabah and Sarawak signed the "Agreement on the Establishment of the Federation of Malaysia", stipulating that the four parties that concluded the agreement form the Federation of Malaysia under the leadership of the British King, confirming the status of Singapore Free Port. On September 16, Rahman announced the establishment of the Federation of Malaysia. In August 1965, Singapore withdrew from the Federation and established a separate Republic of Singapore.
