On December 22, 1983 (the 19th lunar winter month), my country's first billion-time computer,"Galaxy", was successfully developed.

On December 22, 1983, our country's first computer with more than 100 million operations per second - "Galaxy" was successfully developed in Changsha.

The "Galaxy" supercomputer system is currently the fastest computing speed, the largest storage capacity and the most powerful electronic computer in my country. It is an important means for petroleum, geological exploration, medium-and long-term numerical prediction, satellite image processing, calculation of large-scale scientific research topics and national defense construction, and plays a very important role in accelerating my country's modernization drive.

At present, only a few countries are able to develop giant electronic computers. The successful development of the "Galaxy" computer has achieved the goal of "our country's ultra-high-speed giant computer will be put into use" by 1985 proposed by the National Science Conference two years ahead of schedule, making our country step into the ranks of the world's countries that develop giant computers, marking a new stage in the development of computer technology in our country. Since May 1983, the Leading Group of Electronic Computers and Large Scale Integrated Circuits of the State Council has organized 95 computer experts and engineers from 29 units across the country to establish the "Galaxy Computer National Technical Appraisal Team", and divided it into seven groups to conduct a comprehensive and strict technical assessment of the "Galaxy" machine. The results show that: 26 correctness test questions, which are widely representative in national economic development and scientific research, have been calculated three times in succession, the data are exactly the same, the results are correct, and the accuracy meets the requirements; under the control of single-channel operating system or multi-channel operating system, the whole system and host are stable and reliable; the vector operation speed of the hardware system reaches more than 100 million times per second, the software system is rich in content, powerful in function, convenient to use, and advanced in performance. During the design, production and debugging of the "Galaxy" supercomputer, many new technologies, new processes and some theoretical issues have been proposed. Some are used for the first time in China, and some have reached the international level.

The task of developing the "Galaxy" supercomputer was handed over by Comrade Deng Xiaoping to the National Defense Science and Technology Commission in February 1978, and the National Defense Science and Technology Commission implemented this task to the Computer Research Institute of the National University of Defense Technology. This research institute with only more than 200 people has a very young staff team, and there are very few technicians with the title of associate professor or above. However, these young people carry forward the spirit of self-reliance and hard work, and rely on the support and cooperation of more than 20 units in various places. In only 5 years, the development of the "Galaxy" supercomputer was completed, which made the people of the country proud of it.
