On this day, 28 years ago, July 14, 1997 (June 10, 1997 in the lunar calendar), Narayanan was elected the new President of India. Narayanan On July 14, 1997, Indian Vice President Kochrir Raman Narayanan defeated another candidate, Saishan, with an overwhelming majority of 4231 votes to 240 votes in the presidential election and was elected president. On the 25th, Narayanan was sworn in at the Indian Presidential Palace and officially became the 11th President of India. Narayanan was born on February 4, 1921 in a "Dalit"(formerly known as "untouchables") family in Kottayam County, Kerala, southwestern India. In his early years, he studied at the University of Trivandrum in India and the London School of Economics in the United Kingdom. He has successively obtained a Master of Arts and a Doctor of Economics. He was elected as a member of the Indian People's House in 1984, served as Minister of State for Planning from December 1984 to September 1985, became Minister of State for Foreign Affairs in September 1985, and served as Vice President and President of the House of States since 1992.
