On August 8, 1858, the British fleet (34 warships, 163 armed sailboats, commanded by Howard and Drake) launched an attack on the Spanish Armada (22 warships, 108 armed sailboats). The British fleet launched a fire attack on the Western Fleet in the middle of the night on the 7th, and launched an attack on the Western Fleet near Gravolina on the south bank of the Channel of Calais in the early morning of the next day. The Western Fleet tried to get close to the British Fleet to carry out landing operations. However, due to the heavy and poor mobility of the ship and the relatively short range of the artillery, it fell into a passive position under the British Fleet's mobile and flexible long-range artillery fire. The fierce battle reached the evening, and the Spanish Armada was defeated, 600 people were killed, three sailboats were sunk, one was captured, and the British suffered more than 500 casualties. The Spanish fleet was forced to detour Scotland and return home, but was hit by a storm on the way, losing more than 40 ships of various types.
