Breaking-News >> TodayHistory On August 30, 1952, Fuller designed a bizarre new domed roof
On this day, 73 years ago, on August 30, 1952 (July 11, 1952 in the lunar calendar), Fuller designed a bizarre new dome. Fuller explains his latest design, which can solve modern living problems. American inventor Buckminster Fuller's latest design, a short-term dome house that combines light weight and strength, is on display today at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The domed house consists of a frame of aluminum tubes covered with a lightweight weatherproof plastic film. Living areas are suspended from frames with steel cables. The model on display in the exhibition hall represents an 80-foot dome, and Fuller said a dome with an 800-foot span would also be easy to build. Fuller said the aluminum tubes that make up the frame are arranged in a triangular pattern, providing unprecedented strength and lightness. According to Fuller, the dome of St. Peter in Rome spans 138 feet and weighs 10,000 tons; the shortest dome with a diameter of 800 feet weighs only 1,000 tons. Such a dome can be built anywhere and can be disassembled in a matter of days and reused in another location. Once the factory is equipped and put into mass production, such domes can be manufactured at a very low cost. A recently built 49-foot-span shortest dome near Montreal took only 45 people and two hours of labor. The entire frame can be put into the hull of a ship, and workers only need to use hand tools.
