September 15, 1950 US troops landed in Incheon
On this day, 75 years ago, on September 15, 1950 (August 4, 1950, the lunar calendar), the US military successfully landed in Incheon. U.S. Marine Corps landed on rocky coast near Incheon On September 15, 1950, the United Nations military launched an offensive against the besieged southern Korea, boldly landing in Incheon and surprise the Communist forces. South Korean Marines walked on a beach in the Seoul port city of Incheon, while U.S. troops landed on the nearby island of Wormy. The attack was a great adventure for General MacArthur. When his troops broke through the Incheon Line and advanced towards Seoul, it seemed that the adventure had succeeded. No U.S. troops were killed or injured in the operation, but people who had experienced the Guadalcanal operation in the previous war said the landing was the most difficult they had ever experienced. They had to wade through muddy swamps littered with mines and then climb special aluminum ladders up the cliffs. As they climbed the cliff, they encountered sporadic resistance from the North Koreans. Two days of air strikes and artillery fire from cruisers and destroyers destroyed many Communist positions. "B-29" aircraft bombarded the Seoul and Incheon areas continuously. Some flew south to Gwangju to continuously bomb Communist positions, while others flew north to Pyongyang in North Korea to bomb. While Incheon made an unexpected landing, other parts of the country also cooperated in launching attacks. UN troops landed in the west coast city of Kunshan, 100 miles south of Seoul. U.S. and South Korean troops also landed in two strongholds on the east coast of Pohang and Yingdeok, northeast of the Communist Party. Three U.S. destroyers were slightly injured in the battle, and North Korea claimed they had sunk, a claim the United States denies. The landing inspired the United Nations to take action on its southeastern defense line. MacArthur Command announced that Jiashan, which was surrounded by walls 10 miles north of Taegu, had been recovered after being trapped thousands of miles into the Communists. US engineers operate rocket launchers in dry bushes, tired personnel, muddy roads, and US troops retreat through Yongshan Village
