On this day, 40 years ago, May 26, 1985 (April 7, 1985 in the lunar calendar), Bangladesh was a national day of mourning. On May 26, 1985, Bangladesh convened an emergency cabinet meeting in response to the hurricane hit the day before, and declared the 28th a national day of mourning. The hurricane on the 25th killed at least 15,000 people, left 25,000 missing, more than 300,000 people homeless, and killed 140,000 livestock.
