Sixty-four years ago today, on November 11, 1961 (October 4, 1961), the Communist Party of the Soviet Union expelled three senior Stalinists. On November 11, 1961, Malenkov, Kaganovich, and Molotov were expelled from the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. After Stalin's death and the execution of Vice-Chairperson of the Council of Ministers and Head of State Security Beria, Khrushchev fought for power with Stalin's heir apparent, Malenkov. In September 1953, he replaced Malenkov as First Secretary, and in 1955 Malenkov was removed as Chairperson of the Council of Ministers and replaced by Marshal Bulganin, who was selected by him. In May 1955, when Khrushchev first went abroad to visit Yugoslavia with Bourgadet, he began to show his flexibility, apologizing to Tito for Stalin's condemnation of Yugoslav communism in 1948. Later, on visits to Geneva, Afghanistan, and India, he began to show his crude and outward-looking personal diplomacy. During the 20th Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in Moscow in 1956, he gave a secret speech on February 24-25, exposing the atrocities of Stalin's one-man rule, attacking the enemy Soviet ruler's "intolerance, his cruelty, and abuse of power." The First Secretary of the Communist Party's revelations of illegal executions and Soviet police repression during the Great Purges of the 1930s had far-reaching effects that Khrushchev did not expect. Tensions in Eastern Europe formed an anti-Khrushchev faction within the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. In 1957, he finally permanently overthrew Malenkov, Molotov, and others, and labeled them members of the anti-party clique.
