Twenty-eight years ago today, on November 8, 1997 (October 9, 1997 in the lunar calendar), French literary translator Wen Jiasi passed away. On November 8, 1997, Mr. Wen Jiasi, a famous translator of French literature, professor of the Western Languages Department of Peking University, and honorary vice chairman of the 8th Central Committee of the Democratic League, passed away in Beijing today. He was 93 years old. Wen Jiasi was born on February 7, 1905 in Xishui, Hubei Province. He went to France twice in 1926 and 1931, studying French literature at the University of Paris and the University of Glenrobe respectively. After returning to China in 1934, he served successively as a lecturer at Peking University, professor at Southwest Associated University, professor at Peking University, standing member of the School Council of Peking University and director of the Department of Spanish Languages, honorary president of the Wen Yiduo Research Society, and honorary president of the French Literary Research Society. Mr. Wen Jiasi has long been engaged in teaching and research in French language and literature, and has trained a large number of foreign language workers for the country. Mr. Wen Jiasi wrote continuously throughout his life. He wrote many articles in memory of Mr. Wen Yiduo. Later, despite his advanced age, he successively participated in the compilation of French literature entries in the foreign literature volumes of "History of European Literature" and "Encyclopedia of China." Translated and published "Selected Poems of Hugo","Copies of Hugo's Poems" and "Red and Black". These achievements of Mr. Wen Jiasi have played a great role in the education of future generations and the spread of foreign culture in China.
