On June 9, 2007, Zhang Zhidong was destroyed and the remains were unearthed again
On June 9, 2007 (April 24, 2007 in the lunar calendar), the damaged remains of Zhang Zhidong were unearthed again. Zhang Zhidong's remains In the autumn of 1966, Zhang Zhidong, an important minister in the late Qing Dynasty, was killed in the wilderness during the Cultural Revolution, and the remains were missing; 41 years later, the remains of this influential historical celebrity were finally found on June 9, 2007. At present, Zhang Zhidong's remains are temporarily stored in the Martyrs' Cemetery in Nanpi County, and will be buried when Zhang Zhidong's grave is rebuilt on October 4 this year. Zhang Zhidong (1873-1909), whose ancestral home is Shuangmiao Village, Nanpi County, Zhili (now Hebei), was one of the representatives of the Westernization School. He was buried in his hometown after his death. On September 26, 1966, the Lunar Calendar, Red Guards and rebels with iron picks, iron brazing and other tools, excavated Zhang Zhidong's tomb, exposing Zhang Zhidong and the bodies of Wang, Shi and Tang San, who were buried together, to broad daylight. After dozens of days, Zhang Zhidong's remains disappeared. This spring, Xing Jiaxun, president of Zhang Zhidong Research Association, finally found out that Zhang Zhixin, a villager from Nanguan Village, Nanpi County, had collected and buried the remains. Zhang Zhixin said that in the autumn of 1966, he and the villagers went to the field to divide cotton and firewood. A timid woman offered to let him remove the smelly bones of Zhang Zhidong. He risked being criticized and dragged the two bones to the large pit of the cemetery with an old man surnamed Wang, secretly burying the body of Zhang Zhidong and the body of a lady on the west side with soil. In early June this year, when the wheat harvest near Zhang Zhidong cemetery was completed, Xing Jiaxun and others hired an excavator to come to the scene and started digging according to the approximate location indicated by Zhang Zhixin. On the morning of the 9th, people finally found the two bones (pictured). The bones lay side by side, on the North Face, male, left and female, right, which matched Zhang Zhixin's statement. In order to verify its authenticity, the staff of Zhang Zhidong Research Association carefully measured the height and length of the fingers of the remains. After verifying the documents and archives, it was consistent with historical records. And because there are no other graves within a few dozen meters of Zhang Zhidong's tomb, the research association is basically sure to be Zhang Zhidong's remains. Zhang Houqian, a member of the Zhang clan, personally paid tribute to the bones, and the County Civil Affairs Bureau ordered the coffin. At present, Zhang Zhidong and his wife's remains are escorted and placed in the Martyrs' Cemetery, which will be reburied after further scientific identification.
