On September 8, 1134, Alfonso I of Spain died
891 years ago today, on September 8, 1134 (August 18, 1134), the mighty Alfonso I of Spain died. Alfonso I AlfonsoIelBatallador (circa 1073 - September 8, 1134) King of Aragon and Navarre (reigned 1104-1134). Alfonso I was the son of King Sancho I of Aragon. He married Uralca, the heiress of Castile (widow of Raymond, Count of Burgundy). After the death of King Alfonso VI of Castile, Alfonso I (of Aragon) effectively inherited all four Christian states on the Iberian Peninsula (Aragon, Navarre, Leon, Castile). But because the Castilians refused to accept his rule, Alfonso I had to give up the thrones of Leon and Castile and cede them to Alfonso VII, the son of Uralca and his ex-husband. Alfonso I was the representative of the Spanish recovery movement. In 1118 he recaptured Zaragoza from the Moors and in 1120 he repelled the army of the Murabit dynasty that had besieged Zaragoza. Alfonso I made several forays into Andalusia and even southern France. In 1134, Alfonso I was seriously wounded at the Battle of Fraga and died soon after. Comments: Hundreds of years of fighting with the Moors, the Spaniards at that time were quite tough.
