October 16, 1854 Wilde's Birthday
171 years ago today, October 16, 1854 (August 25, 1854 in the lunar calendar), Wilde, the initiator of the aestheticism movement, was born. In England at the end of the 19th century, there was a social influential play called "Salome". The main plot of the script is: The girl Salome wanted to kiss John the prophet, but she did not have the opportunity. In order to achieve this goal, she tried every means to instigate King Herod to cut off John's head, so that she had the opportunity to kiss John's head contained in a silver shield. She kissed John on the head, and King Herod ordered the guards to kill her. The author of the play is Wilde, an advocate of the British aestheticism movement and an important playwright. Oscar Wilde was born on October 16, 1854. His father was a famous doctor in Dublin, Ireland, England, and his mother was famous for writing poetry. After receiving excellent grades at Trinity College in Dublin, Wilde went to Magdalene College at Oxford University to study ancient Greek classics. His aesthetic thoughts were influenced by Oxford professors Walter Peter and John Ruskin. In 1876, he traveled to Italy and Greece, further exposing himself to the ancient non-Christian delicacy culture, which had a great influence on his literary theory and practice. In 1878, his poem "Ravana", which won a college prize, began to reflect his artistic view: "Poetry should be like a crystal ball, it should make life seem more beautiful and less real." After Wilde's father died, he moved to London with his mother. At this time, Wilde officially promoted his bourgeois literary proposition of "art for art's sake." He believes that "it is not art that reflects life, but life that imitates art." It flaunts literature and art from politics, opposes the social educational role of literature and art, and advocates that only "beauty" has eternal value. He not only has theory, but also practice. His creative activities cover a wide range of topics and have achieved certain results in poetry, novels, fairy tales, and scripts. In particular, he has made great achievements in script creation. In addition to "Salome", there are also "Lady Windermeier's Fan","An Insignificant Woman","The Ideal Husband" and "The Importance of a Name Ernst". Among them, the play "The Importance of Being Called Ernst" is considered to be one of the masterpieces of comedy. These works all have varying degrees of aestheticism, making him a representative writer of aestheticism. Wilde was imprisoned for defamation in 1895. After being released from prison in 1897, he was impoverished and died of illness in a small inn in France in 1900.
