Thirty years ago today, on December 27, 1995 (November 6, 1995 lunar calendar), France announced the results of its investigation into the mass death of "Taiyang Temple" members. On December 27, 1995, Jean-François Laurent, the prosecutor general of the city of Grenoble, France, announced the preliminary findings of the investigation into the mass death of "Taiyang Temple" members. On December 23, French police found the bodies of 16 Taiyang Temple members in the mountains near the eastern French city of Grenoble, three of whom were children. Fourteen bodies were arranged in a sun-shaped circle, and the other two bodies were outside the circle, all charred. Four forensic doctors performed autopsies on 16 bodies over two days, Mr. Laurent said, and determined that the deaths occurred after 1 a.m. or 2 a.m. on Dec. 16. Fourteen of them had been sedated and were comatose, with bullet holes in their heads and chests. They were most likely doused with flammable liquid after lying down, and then shot dead by two others, the prosecutor general said. The shooters may have been two French police officers belonging to the Temple of the Sun. After killing the other members, the two officers also doused themselves with flammable liquid and then shot themselves. Investigators found a handgun next to each of their right hands, Mr. Laurent said, as well as two carbines and empty bottles of fueled alcohol at the scene. Mr. Laurent also revealed that the police had found 16 passports in a car left behind by the deceased, but that the identities of the 16 victims had not yet been fully identified. He stressed that this was only a preliminary investigation and that the police "do not rule out" the possibility that someone else was involved in the tragedy, but this is "unlikely."
