Breaking-News >> TodayHistory On July 16, 1039, Yuan Hao was stripped of his national surname by the Song Dynasty
On this day, 986 years ago, July 16, 1039 (June 23, 1039, the lunar calendar), Yuan Hao was stripped of his national surname by the Song Dynasty. At the tomb of Yuanhao, Yuan Hao was taken away by the Song Dynasty. At the end of the ninth century AD, Tuoba Sigong, the leader of the Tangxiang tribe, sent troops to help the Tang Dynasty and suppress the Huangchao Uprising. Tang Xizong granted him the title of Jiedushi of the Dingnan Army, promoted him to the rank of Duke of Xia, and gave him the surname Li (the same surname as the emperor, called the "national surname"). After the establishment of the Northern Song Dynasty, Dangxiang Luli served in the Song Dynasty. During the reign of Emperor Taizong of the Song Dynasty, Li Jiqian, the leader of the Dangxiang tribe, was given the name Zhao Baoji. In 1032, Zhao Yuanhao (Li Yuanhao), grandson of Zhao Baoji (Li Jiqian), was made Crown Prince. Determined to demonstrate the control of the Song Dynasty, Yuan Hao implemented a series of new measures, stipulating the official system, military system, and legal system, and creating the Xixia script; ordered the abolition of the surnames given by the Tang and Song Dynasties and the use of the Dangxiang surnames. In 1038, Yuan Hao officially proclaimed himself emperor and established the Great Xia Kingdom, with its capital Xingqing (now Yinchuan, Ningxia). In 1039, he requested the Song Dynasty to recognize the State of Xia and confer the title of emperor. Unexpectedly, on July 16 (June 23), the Song Dynasty issued an edict to cut off his title, take his national surname, and recruit people to capture Yuan Hao. Relations between the Song and Xia Dynasties became increasingly tense. Comments: Xixia, a small country, can exist for so long between Mongolia and the Song Dynasty.
