On this day, 97 years ago, July 7, 1928 (May 20, 1928, the Nanjing National Government announced the abolition of the unequal treaties between China and foreign countries. On July 7, 1928, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Nanjing National Government issued a declaration on abolishing the treaty, stating that if treaties with other countries have expired, the original treaty will be abolished and a new treaty will be entered into; if the treaty has not yet expired, the original treaty will be terminated through "formal" procedures and a new treaty will be entered into; if the Old Covenant has expired but the New Covenant has not yet been concluded, another provisional measure will be entered into. On the 27th, the "Treaty to Consolidate the Tariff Relations between China and the United States" signed with the United States was first announced. The treaty recognized China's "principle of complete tariff autonomy" but also stipulated that the United States still enjoys most-favored-nation treatment.
