On this day, 71 years ago, July 13, 1954 (June 14, 1954, the inventor of cellophane Brandberg passed away. On July 13, 1954, Jacques Brandberg, the chemist who invented cellophane, died in Zurich at the age of 81. At the University of Bern he was trained as a dye chemist. He later moved to France and invented a method of making transparent packaging materials in 1908. In 1915, he founded the "Cellophane Research Society", which later transformed it into an important industrial enterprise. Brandberg sold the patent for cellophane to DuPont in the United States, but still retained the rights at his company and subsidiaries around the world. At the time of his death, he was being treated in Zurich for kidney disease.
