Xie Xiaoxun passed away in Shanghai on the evening of December 22, 1987, at the age of 101.

Mr. Xie, who was vice-chairperson of the Chinese Chess Association, deputy director of the Shanghai Chess Association and a librarian at the Shanghai Museum of Culture and History, said in his will: "I will give all my chess books and materials to the Shanghai Chess Club."
