Breaking-News >> TodayHistory September 2, 1945 North Korea's 38th parallel division
On this day, 80 years ago, September 2, 1945 (July 26, 1945 in the lunar calendar), North Korea was divided into the 38th parallel. On September 2, 1945, in accordance with the allied agreement, MacArthur, the Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces, used the 38th parallel north latitude as the boundary in the first order as the temporary demarcation line for the US and Soviet armies to accept the surrender of the Japanese troops stationed in Korea and conduct military activities against Japan respectively. The north is the surrender area of the Soviet troops stationed in Korea and the south is the surrender area of the US troops. After Japan surrendered, the U.S. and Soviet troops stationed in the north and south areas of the 38th parallel respectively. In August and September 1948, the government of the Republic of Korea and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea were established in the north and south of Korea. In October, the Soviet Union handed over administrative power north of the 38th Parallel to the Korean people, and by December all Soviet troops had withdrawn. The U.S. military continues to be stationed south of the 38th parallel and refuses to withdraw its troops, thus causing division of North Korea's land and nation. Transportation, telecommunications and exchanges of personnel and materials on both sides of the 38th parallel were cut off. In June 1950, a military conflict broke out between the north and the south near the 38th parallel, resulting in the three-year Korean War. In July 1953, the north-south military demarcation line was adjusted on the basis of the 38th parallel, and two kilometers on both sides of the temporary military demarcation line were designated as demilitarized zones. It is still customary to call it the 38th parallel. News raw data sources → https://www.abtool.cn/today_detail/13jj.html 17WorldNews[2025.09.27-13:15] 访问:69
