Taiyuan fell on November 9, 1937
On this day, 88 years ago, on November 9, 1937 (October 7, 1937, the lunar calendar), Taiyuan fell. Japanese troops flocked in from the collapsed Taiyuan City Wall. From November 2 to 9, 1937, in order to defend Taiyuan City, Yan Xishan, commander of the Second World War Area, organized the Battle of Taiyuan. In late October, after Niangziguan fell, the Japanese army invaded Yangquan and Shouyang, approached Yuci, and threatened Taiyuan. Yan Xishan ordered Wei Lihuang's troops to withdraw from the Xinkou position and return to defend the periphery of Taiyuan, helping Fu Zuoyi's troops defend Taiyuan. When Wei Lihuang's troops retreated, they were pursued by the main Japanese army and suffered heavy losses. They were unable to organize a new defense line and were forced to retreat to the west bank of the Fen River. Fu Zuoyi's troops, which were responsible for defending the city, began to exchange fire with the Japanese army on the 6th. On the 8th, the main forces of the Japanese army's east and north corps gathered at the foot of Taiyuan City to launch a general attack. Under the repeated bombardment of Japanese aircraft and fierce artillery bombardment, many places on the east and north sides of Taiyuan collapsed, and the Japanese army broke through the China garrison positions. China's defenders refused to retreat and fought repeatedly, resulting in extremely heavy deaths. On the 9th, Fu Zuoyi, commander-in-chief of Taiyuan's city defense, saw that the situation was irreversible and ordered his troops to break through westward, and Taiyuan fell. On November 8, the Japanese army invaded Taiyuan, Shanxi Province, and organized Yan Xishan, commander of the Second World War District, who was in command of the Taiyuan Defense War
