He was kidnapped by militants in Iraq and killed after the South Korean government refused the militants' request to withdraw. Kim Hyonichi, the only son of eight children in his family, was the seventh and a devout Christian. He studied at Yongsan University and Kyung Sung University, and was called by God to preach for life and attend a seminary. After graduating in theology, he entered the Korea University of Foreign Studies in February 2003 to study for a bachelor's degree in Arabic. He went to the Middle East as a missionary on June 15, 2003, entered Iraq as an interpreter to work and preach the gospel to Iraqis. What happened: On May 30, 2004, he was captured in Fallujah, 50 kilometers west of Baghdad. After that, the bandits repeatedly asked the South Korean government to withdraw the troops, but the news was withheld halfway through, and Kim Hyun-il was killed on June 22, 2004. A clip of Kim's beheading was uploaded to an American website, causing anger among South Koreans, who repeatedly attacked the website with "denial of service" (DoS). The funeral of Kim Hyun-il was held in Busan on June 30, 2004, with a banner in English, Arabic and Korean: "I love Iraq", expressing the respect of Koreans and Christians around the world for the Korean martyr of the Gospel of Christ.
