Due to the upsurge of the civil rights movement, President Kennedy proposed a relatively progressive civil rights bill, but it was opposed by conservatives. Just as Congress was debating the civil rights bill, on August 28, 1963, the American people began the "March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom". More than 200,000 blacks and whites from all 50 states in the United States held the largest demonstration ever in Washington. At 11 a.m., the march departed from the Washington Monument, divided into two columns, and marched to the Lincoln Memorial. They put forward slogans such as "Freedom Now", "We Want to Work", "We March to Become First Class Citizens Now!".
