Forty-six years ago today, on December 10, 1979 (October 21, 1979 lunar calendar), the "Beautiful Island" incident took place in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. On December 10, 1979, the founders of "Beautiful Island" magazine, Huang Xinjie, Xu Xinliang and other non-party people, on the grounds of celebrating "International Human Rights Day", applied to the authorities to hold a rally and parade in Kaohsiung City, but were not allowed. They ignored the ban of the authorities and held the parade and rally as originally planned. When the conference was about to start, more and more participants came, reaching about 3,000 people. Some people lit torches. The authorities believed that the demonstrators were dishonest and dispatched anti-riot vehicles. At 19:00, people on the propaganda vehicle of "Beautiful Island" began to speak and shout slogans. "Down with the secret service rule" and "Oppose the Kuomintang dictatorship" were among the strong slogans, and Huang Xinjie and Yao Jiawen both boarded the car to give speeches. At 21:00, the conflict between the two sides worsened in front of the service office, and the gendarmerie began a large-scale anti-riot operation and fired tear gas. Many people in the crowd resisted with torches, wooden sticks, and throwing stones and wine bottles. By 2:30 a.m., the authorities had brought the situation under control. Non-party members involved in the "Beautiful Island" rally were arrested one after another on "suspicion of rebellion".
