101 years ago today, July 14, 1924 (June 13, 1924 in the lunar calendar), Scottish pharmacologist James White Brak was born. Sir James White Black, OM, FRS, FRSE, FRCP(SirJames Whyte Black, born July 14, 1924) was a Scottish pharmacologist who invented the drug Propranolol and synthesized cimetidine. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1988 for these achievements. Black attended Beath High School in Cowdenbeath, Fife, Scotland, and later studied pharmacology at the University of St Andrews in Fife, where he worked as an intern in Dundee. Before taking a chair at the University of Malaya, he joined the Department of Physiology at the University of St Andrews. Black returned to Scotland in 1950, joined the Veterinary School of the University of Glasgow, and established the School of Physiology for the school. In addition to being active in academia, Braque was hired by Imperial Chemical Industries (1958 - 1964), GlaxoSmithKline (1964 - 1973) and the Wellcome Foundation (1978 - 1984). In addition, he was appointed as Professor of Pharmacology at University College London (1973 - 1978) and King's College London (1984 - 1992). In 1976, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society and was awarded the Lasker Prize the same year. Braque was named Sir of the Lower Order in 1981. In 2000, Sir Brak was awarded the Medal of Merit by Queen Elizabeth II. The Medal has only 24 places and is the highest honor that a British monarch can award.
