The solar eclipse experiment on December 29, 1919 proved Einstein's theory
106 years ago today, December 29, 1919 (November 8, 1919, the lunar calendar), solar eclipse experiments proved Einstein's theory. A report at a historic joint meeting of the Royal Society and the Royal Astronomical Society held in London in late 1919 reported that the fundamental theory of Albert Einstein's theory of relativity was fully confirmed. Teams of British astronomers on an expedition to the island of Principe off the coast of northern Brazil and western Africa observed that the March 29 solar eclipse showed that the curvature of light as it approached the sun was exactly the same as Einstein predicted. Joseph Thomson, president of the Royal Astronomical Society, said after listening to the report that Einstein's book "is one of the greatest works and probably the greatest achievement in human history." His praise was significant because Einstein announced his theory in Berlin in 1915 during the war, and because the hatred between the two former hostile countries remains deep today. The confirmation of Einstein's theory shows that Sir Isaac Newton's absolute image of time and space must be replaced by the time and space of a universe, which is relative. Einstein's theory was so complex that few people could fully understand his theory.
