In 1943, he went to Luyeyuan, a Buddhist holy place in India, to study Buddhism, and at the same time studied Sanskrit and Pali, embarking on the path of Sanskrit research. He returned to China in 1946 and served as a professor of philosophy at Wuhan University. After 1948, he served as a professor in the Department of Oriental Languages and Literature at Peking University. She later married the sister of historian Wu Yuqian.
