In 1943, he went to Luyeyuan, a Buddhist holy place in India, to study Buddhism, and at the same time studied Sanskrit and Pali, embarking on the path of Sanskrit research. He returned to China in 1946 and served as a professor of philosophy at Wuhan University. After 1948, he served as a professor in the Department of Oriental Languages and Literature at Peking University. She later married the sister of historian Wu Yuqian. Together with Ji Xianlin, Zhang Zhongxing and Deng Guangming, they are called the "Four Old People of Yanyuan". He has served successively as a member of the 3rd to 7th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, a member of the 5th to 7th Standing Committee of the Jiusan Society, and a director of the Propaganda Department. On August 5, 2000, he passed away due to illness in Beijing. His last words: "I came crying and left smiling."
