Rodin In 1900, August Rodin held an exhibition of works in Paris, establishing his reputation as a sculptor. His main contribution was to restore Western sculpture's understanding of human beings and its expression of the spiritual world, and is considered to be the greatest portrait sculptor in the history of sculpture. Rodin was born in Paris in 1840 and showed his talent for art since he was a child. However, due to poor grades in basic art courses and culture courses, he was not admitted to the art university and failed three times. In 1864, Rodin learned sculpture from the famous animal sculptor Louis-Barry. Due to his hard work, he made rapid progress. Later, he studied painting at the Louvre, known as the "Little Academy of Fine Arts". The studio owner was Albert Earnest Garier Bayles, a well-known master of decoration and carving during the Second Empire. After a period of study, Rodin has the conditions to become an excellent sculptor. Before the age of 35, Rodin's personal style had not yet been determined. In 1875, Rodin visited Italy and admired the great Michelangelo, which had a huge influence on his future creation. In 1878, Rodin's exhibition of "The Bronze Age" caused a lot of discussion. Many people did not admit that it was a work of art because it was too realistic and said that it was based on real people. This incident shocked Rodin a lot and made him think about the expression of the work. He felt that extreme similarity meant nothing new and was not conducive to expressing deep thoughts and feelings. Therefore, Rodin's subsequent works are vivid and full of inner spirit. His masterpiece "The Gate of Hell" has a total of 186 shapes and lasted for 37 years. It was not completed until his death. The "Thinker","Kiss", etc. were enlarged and became a world-renowned masterpiece independently. Rodin's other major works include: The Man with a Wounded Nose (1864), The Bronze Age (1876), The Sermon of St. John (1878), The Gate of Hell (1880-1917), Adam (1880), Eve (1881), The Righteous People of Calais (1884-1886), The Kiss (1886), Balzac (1897), Hugo (1897).
